p-token (SIMD-0266) activates at epoch 409 (FG 02)

SPL Token is replaced in place by p-token. Mints, token accounts, wallets and apps keep working unchanged.

Nick P · X1 Labs ·

At the start of epoch 409 (slot 85,798,112, 02:38 UTC on 14 October), X1 replaced its SPL Token program in place with p-token. It is the gate most people will benefit from without noticing anything changed.

What it is

p-token is a rewrite of the token program that every X1 token uses. It keeps the same address (Tokenkeg…), the same instructions and the same account layout, so existing tokens, token accounts, wallets and apps keep working with no changes. What changes is how much computing each instruction needs.

How much cheaper

The upstream proposal (SIMD-0266) measured the same instructions before and after:

  • Transfer: 4,645 compute units down to 76
  • MintTo: 4,538 to 119
  • InitializeAccount: 4,527 to 154
  • Approve: 2,904 to 124
  • CloseAccount: 2,916 to 120

That is 95-98% less compute per token instruction. Token-2022 is a different program and is not affected.

Why it's good for X1

Token instructions are a big share of what fills a block. Making them twenty to forty times cheaper frees that space for everything else: DEX routes, bridge mints, games, confidential payments. More fits in each block before X1's dynamic base fee starts rising, so busy days stay cheap for longer. Programs that call the token program also get cheaper to run, which makes building on X1 easier.

What to watch

  • The saving only reaches users who ask for it. X1 fees are based on the compute limit a transaction requests, not what it uses. Wallets and apps should set an explicit, lower compute-unit limit on token transactions.
  • p-token adds three instructions (batch, withdraw_excess_lamports, unwrap_lamports). Explorers, bots and indexers that decode token instructions need to know them.

Feature gate update: FG 02 is scheduled The Efficient Token program (SIMD-0266, p-token) activates on mainnet at the start of epoch 409 (slot 85,798,112, around 02:36 UTC on Oct 14). At the boundary, the SPL Token program (Tokenkeg...) is replaced in place by p-token, a much more efficient implementation. The program address, instruction set and account layout stay the same, so existing mints, token accounts, wallets and apps keep working with no changes. This has been live on testnet since early September.
